Available 24/7 — $95 consultation fee may apply
Step-by-Step: What to Do
- 1
Stay Calm and Act Quickly
Your pet depends on you. Take a deep breath and move through these steps methodically. Time matters.
- 2
Remove Your Pet from the Source
Move your pet away from the toxic substance immediately. Remove any remaining substance from their mouth if safe to do so.
- 3
Identify the Substance
Gather the product container, plant clipping, or any remnants. Note the active ingredients, concentration, and estimated amount ingested.
- 4
Call Poison Control or Your Vet
Call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 or your regular veterinarian. Have the substance information ready.
- 5
Do NOT Induce Vomiting Unless Instructed
Some substances cause more damage coming back up. Only induce vomiting if a veterinary professional instructs you to do so.
- 6
Get to the Vet
If directed by poison control or your vet, transport your pet to the nearest emergency veterinary clinic immediately.
What NOT to Do
- Do NOT induce vomiting without veterinary guidance
- Do NOT give your pet milk, oil, salt, or any home remedies
- Do NOT wait to "see if symptoms develop" — some toxins have delayed onset
- Do NOT try to make your pet eat or drink anything without veterinary instruction
